GLCA Fund for the Study of Japan

Grant from the Japan Foundation New York Offers A New Opportunity for Travel to Japan

The second travel project supported jointly by the Japan Foundation New York and the GLCA Fund for the Study of Japan will depart June 1 and return June 10, 2010.  Professor Ann Sherif, Oberlin College, is leading this project. We are seeking six to seven faculty members, especially from the fields of Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Environmental Studies, Film, History, Literature and Sociology to participate in the study tour, Environment and Nature in Japan.

This program will explore traditional concepts of nature as well as the interaction of society and the environment in modern Japan. Participants will gain new perspectives on concepts of nature in another culture and on approaches to the environment and sustainability in another G-20 nation.  In addition, participants will expand their knowledge of Japanese history, culture, and contemporary society overall, enriching potential teaching on Japan.

Contact
Joyce Budai to learn more about the project and request an application form.  The deadline for submission of applications is December 1, 2009.  Participants will be selected by the end of January 2010  Participation in a one-day, pre-travel meeting (TBA) and selected readings are important parts of the project.  Faculty members from the GLCA or the ACM with an interest in learning more about Japan for curricular or scholarly purposes, but with no special training in Japan Studies, are eligible to apply.

The Great Lakes Colleges Association's Fund for the Study of Japan provides an array of grant opportunities for faculty members engaged in various fields of Japan Studies.  These opportunities are supported by an endowment to promote Japanese Studies and Japan-related activities in the United States.

Several categories of grants have been established in response to the nature and scope of the requests the Fund has received over the past few years.  Use these as a guide for your proposal, but do not hesitate to suggest new areas or activities for funding.  Periodically there are stand alone opportunities for funding to special events.
